ave you found true happiness yet? It seems like the whole world is in search of happiness and looks for it in different ways. In this blog post, we will be going over what Guru Sahib Ji (Enlightener Master) says about this and how we can move towards finding true happiness in our lives.

Looking for Sukh (Peace)

We look for Sukh, but we don’t get Sukh. In your mind right now, reflect on the 5 things that you think you can do, so that you can be happy. Everybody has 4 or 5 things in their minds, that if achieved or attained, they think they will be happy. Give this some thought. In your mind right now, you probably are thinking if this happens and if that happens, then I will be happy.

Now Imagine what would happen if you did those things and you still don't get happiness. Could this be possible? But maybe our desires are wrong. Guru Sahib Ji tells us that if you look at this game and realise that it is fake and start asking for the right things, then you can have happiness. But only if you ask for the right thing.

If internally you are ready to not live inside this worldly illusion anymore, then you’ll be fed up with Maya (Ilusion). If you are not fed up, then you’ll continue to suffer. But at some point, you’ll get fed up. Do Ardaas (humble request) to Maharaj Ji (Great King, referring to Guru Ji): Show me the end of this Maya. Let me find Naam (connection to the Divine). But if you ask for the right thing, Maharaj Ji can give you true happiness!

What Does Guru Ji Say About Happiness?

Maharaj Ji says, “do you want to always be happy?” Think about it. Have you ever met anyone who is always happy? Someone who is ALWAYS happy and never sad. Can you imagine that life of forever being happy?

ਜਉ ਸੁਖ ਕਉ ਚਾਹੈ ਸਦਾ ਸਰਨਿ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਲੇਹ ॥

If you yearn for eternal peace, then seek the Sanctuary of the Lord.

Maharaj Ji says, “take the sanctuary of God, if you want happiness forever”. This is from Gurbani. If you read Gurbani (Guru’s words/teachings), you will come across this similar message again and again. That the world is false and Gurbani is the ultimate Truth. Naam is the ultimate Truth and the worldly illusion (Maya) is false. If you don't want to listen to that, if you find it awkward and if you're not ready for that lesson, then that’s because the candle is not yet ready for the light of the Guru. Especially for one day in the fire of sunlight (the Guru's light), at any time that candle could dry out. That's why this might sound like a harsh message, because sometimes the sun is hot. But in that hot sun, the candle dries out. And now it's ready, after an hour maybe, for that light.

Maharaj Ji says in Bani:

ਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਝਿੜਕੇ ਤ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਜੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਤ ਗੁਰ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨੫॥

Even if the Guru rebukes me, He still seems very sweet to me. And if He actually forgives me, that is the Guru's greatness. ||25||

Maharaj Ji says, “if my Guru tells me off, I will still find it Meethaa (sweet)”. Guru Sahib Ji says this in Raag (musical mode) Suhi (to express deep love). Guru Ram Das Maharaj Ji says so sweetly, “I am the kind of person that I don't mind if Guru Ji tells me off”. Sat Sangat Ji, when Guru Amar Das Maharaj Ji writes bani, it is quite harsh. They're very harsh and direct because they are in their nineties. They aren’t here to please anybody. They just say the truth, straight. They tell everybody off, may they be younger or older. Like a grandfather who is blunt and straight up with everyone. They are not scared of pleasing anybody.

Guru Amar Das Maharaj Ji is very harsh, but Guru Ram Das Ji says, “I don't mind if my Guru tells me off. I'm happy because He wants the best for me”. When Guru Sahib Ji tells us things, like we are trapped in Maya. When He tells us off for being attached to gold, clothes, money and houses. He isn’t doing it because He doesn't like us. He is not coming and taking our fun away. So we shouldn’t react like a child who gets upset with their parents. Like when they say, “no more iPad and no more TV”, the child gets upset. "No, I want more!" Then the child starts crying. The child hates it and looks at their parents with anger. Guru Sahib Ji isn’t doing this because He hates us. He is doing it out of Piaar (love).

ਤੁਮ ਕਰਹੁ ਭਲਾ ਹਮ ਭਲੋ ਨ ਜਾਨਹ ਤੁਮ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥

You do good for us, but we do not see it as good; You are kind and compassionate, forever and ever.

Sarbat da Bhalla (goodness for humanity), do you know what that means? It means good for everybody! Guru Sahib Ji says, “God, you do good things. I just don't know what is good. I think that what I know is good for me”. I don't realise, maybe I don't know anything.
