n this short article, we will learn about how Vaheguru forgives our sins.
Take Action To Seek Forgiveness
In Jap Ji Sahib, Guru Nanak Dev Ji says
ਸੁਣਿਐ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਪ ਕਾ ਨਾਸੁ ॥੮॥
Many people misunderstand the word ਸੁਣਿਐ (Suniai). It doesn’t just mean to listen to Bani (Guru's words). True listening means that you do what you are told. Parents often say to their kids that they don’t listen. Parents don’t mean that the kids don’t ‘listen’ to them but that they don’t do what they are told. ਸੁਣਿਐ (Suniai) means to do and ਮੰਨੇ (Manne) means to accept that we should do it.
We hear all the time that the Guru asks us to Jap Naam (chant the name of Vaheguru), but we rarely sit down to actually do it. By doing Naam Japna (Chanting God's Name), we are starting to wipe out our sins even though our minds may not fully understand how it is working out. By walking upon the Guru’s path and listening (referring to doing) to the Guru even if our mind isn't fully reformed, still means that our sin is being forgiven.
Only the Greatest Action can Redeem You
We do various kinds of Karam (actions) as we go through our life. The only thing beyond Karam (action) is Naam Japna. All other actions create Karam (referring to Karma), the only action that does not create Karam and wipes away all other Karam is Naam Japna. So, Naam Japna is the solution to sin. As Guru Nanak Dev Ji says
ਭਰੀਐ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਪਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
ਓਹੁ ਧੋਪੈ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
What are you waiting for?
On a practical level, if you know that you are making a mistake and doing something wrong, then fix it now. The process starts now because Gurbani says,
ਹਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਹਾਂ ਇਕ ਦਮੀ ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
Our life is the breath that we are taking in right now, we do not know if we will take our next breath or not. If you say that you'll fix it in the future, it is highly likely that you will end up not fixing it because you have lived with it for so long that you will start to justify it. It will become a part of your life. Make that change now because we do not have control over tomorrow.
