P

eople from other religions usually question if Sikhi is a man-made religion. In this article, we will discuss why Sikhi is not a man-made religion by looking at three different aspects of Sikhi.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji - The Founder

This Shabad is sung in every Gurdwara after the Ardas is done each time. These words are by Guru Gobind Singh Ji and They say that when the order came from the Immortal Being, then this Way (Khalsa) began, All Sikhs are ordered to accept the Granth as Guru. Bhai Gurdas Ji (the most eminent Sikh Historian at the time of Guru Sahibs) says that Guru Nanak Dev Ji established their authority in the world and started a religion that is free of impurity (Nirmal Panth). Guru Nanak Dev Ji became a Guru not from any other human Guru. They were made Guru by Vaheguru directly. When Guru Ji was 27 years old and lived in Sultanpur, they went into a river to have a bath, and they disappeared for three days. At that time, they went to the court of Vaheguru, and there Guru Ji was told that you are now the Guru. Vaheguru said ‘I want you to go out and spread the message of the Shabad’. On Ang 150 of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Guru Nanak Dev Ji says that They were an unemployed bard who was given a job directly by Vaheguru to spread the Shabad. Bhai Gurdas Ji has also written that Vaheguru, the giver to all, heard the cries of humanity and sent Guru Nanak Dev Ji into this world.

Gurbani - The Divine Revelation

Gurbani (Guru’s words) is a revelation and not just Gurus saying themselves. In the following Shabad, Guru Nanak Dev Ji stated that as the Bani of Vaheguru comes to me, so do I make it known to everybody.

ਜੈਸੀ ਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਖਸਮ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਤੈਸੜਾ ਕਰੀ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਵੇ ਲਾਲੋ ॥

As the Word of the Forgiving Lord comes to me, so do I express it, O Lalo.

Guru Ji is saying that it is a revelation which is stated many times in Gurbani. One of the clearest examples is the following Shabad of Guru Ram Das Ji where They say, ‘O’ Sikhs of the Guru, accept the Bani as truth upon the truth because Vaheguru is making these words come out of my mouth.’

O GurSikhs, know that the Bani, the Word of the True Guru, is true, absolutely true. The Creator Lord Himself causes the Guru to chant it.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji also said, ‘I don’t say these words, these are all your (referring to the Divine) words that you make me say.’ We read these words every day in the morning and the evening and are as follows

O sword-wielder Vaheguru! This all has been described by Thy Grace, what power can I have to write all this?.863.

So, Gurbani is a revelation from Vaheguru directly given to us.

Khalsa Panth - Vaheguru’s Army

Guru Gobind Singh Ji said that when the order from Vaheguru came, that is when They started the Khalsa Panth. Sikhs were ready at that time so that Guru Gobind Singh Ji could pass the Guruship to the Khalsa Panth. Khalsa always greets each other by saying “Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh” which means that the Khalsa belongs to Vaheguru and the Victory belongs to Vaheguru. Thus, Khalsa works for Vaheguru’s victory. Guru Gobind Singh Ji has stated in Their Bani that Khalsa is Vaheguru’s army.

To conclude, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was sent by Vaheguru, Gurbani is from Vaheguru directly and the Khalsa is Vaheguru’s army. So, none of these are man-made, all of these are divine-made. Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the embodiment of Vaheguru’s light because it has got the whole message that we need to be enlightened.
